SELF-CONTAINED INSTALLATION
The downloads on this page install as just one folder that can be placed anywhere on your computer, or just left on a memory stick to take around with you.
The installation (on any of the three platforms) consists of a single folder (called 'IMDiary' on Windows, IMDiaryM on MacOS and IMDiaryL on Linux).This folder contains the application and another folder called 'data', a PDF help file and a dictionary (wp) which is part of the Password Manager.
The main differences between this and the standard version are:
* There is no formal installer as there is with the standard version and the downloads consist of zipped files which need to be un-zipped with a suitable de-archiver such as WinZip.
* You should use the separate update installer to update to later versions.
* Your diary file (which is diary.ads by default) MUST be in the data folder.
* You can still save diary files with new names to other parts of your computer but if you double-click these files they will not run automatically because the parent application is not in the usual Program Files type of location. You can get them to open with the application by defining it in 'Open With...' and you would need to do this in order to open your backup files. There are instructions how to do this here.
WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE NEVER USED THIS PROGRAM BEFORE AND WANT TO USE THIS SELF-CONTAINED VERSION?
Just install (unzip) the Self-contained version for your operating system to a place of your choice. Initially the unzipped folder will be called either IMDiary, IMDiaryL or IMDiaryM (depending on your operating system) but you can rename it to anything you want. Find the application within the folder (InMyDiarySC.exe on windows, InMyDiarySC on MacOS and InMyDiarySCL on Linux) and double-click it to run.
In My Diary is a fairly small program and you can have as many renamed copies of the self-contained folder as you like on your computer or flash drive, each one will then support a different diary. If you want to use the diary on different types of computer, see below.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I ALREADY HAVE A NORMAL INSTALLATION OF IN MY DIARY? CAN I USE THE SELF-CONTAINED ONE AS WELL?
This may give rise to confusion if you double-click your diary.ads (or other default file) in the self-contained folder to run it, because this .ads file will open with your fully installed version of In My Diary. This will then load and show the options, special day, anniversary, journal data and Password database that belong to the full installation, not those in the self-contained folder.
The bottom line is: it is really better to opt for one system or the other. From version 2.95 it is easy to move all your data from a standard installation to a self-contained one as explained below. If you do this you should then uninstall your standard version to avoid the problem described above.
Download the self-contained version, unpack the zip file and add the folder there (IMDiary, IMDiaryL or IMDiaryM depending on your operating system) to your computer. The folder can be placed anywhere that is convenient for you. The first time you run the self-contained version it will check to see if there is a standard version already present and then give you the option to copy your Diary file, Options, Journal, Password database, Anniversary data etc into the new folder. You should do this NOW if you want to make the transfer automatically, although it is possible to move data manually at a later time if you don't take this option, or already have an older version of the self-contained edition.
If you don't opt to let the program perform the automated import as just described but later wish you had, you can reset the self-contained version to its startup condition by deleting the codes folder in the data folder. This will make the program think it is running for the first time and allow the opportunity once again to copy your data.
Once you are sure you can run the new application in the IMDiary folder and see all your old data you can uninstall the old version of In My Diary so you are left with just the self-contained issue.
CAN I SHARE THE SAME DATA ON A MEMORY STICK BETWEEN COMPUTERS WITH DIFFERENT OPERATING SYSTEMS?
Yes, but you will need to download the zipped file for each operating system you require then, using one of the IMDiary(L)(M) folders created, make sure the application (InMyDiarySC.exe on windows, InMyDiarySC on MacOS and inmydiarySCL on Linux) is placed in the IMDiary folder for each system you use. Just make sure you then double-click the correct one for the computer your memory stick is being used in.
OPENING YOUR BACKUP FILES WITH THE SELF-CONTAINED VERSION
The standard version of In My Diary can open any diary file created by simply double-clicking the file. This is not so with the self-contained version and this can cause a problem if you want to open files in your backup folder. You therefore need to set manually these files to be opened by InMyDairySC.exe. Open your backup folder from View > Backups and select any backup file - it doesn't matter which. Double-Click the file and you will get a message from Windows to tell you that Windows can't open the file. Choose 'Select a program from a list of installed programs' and click the Browse button in the window that opens. You will then need to navigate to your IMDiary folder, open the folder and select InMyDiarySC.exe. The browse window will close and take you back to the program selector. Make sure 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is ticked and confirm your choice. You should then be able to open any backup diary by double-clicking over it.
